“I want my music to be timeless.” – Szymon
It was a moment of sheer elation tonight when I first heard the music of Szymon Borzestowski, just seconds into ‘Medusa’, I knew I was hooked! So I set about investigating who the creator of this sublime music was and then discovered the very tragic story behind this young Australian musician.
With a studio set up in his bedroom, Szymon dedicated his life to music, he loved it, lived it, breathed it and could be lost for days whilst creating his hypnotic art-pop. Graduating from high school in 2006, he spent the following year writing music before deciding to spend a few months traveling, exploring his Polish heritage whilst in Europe.
Whilst away, Szymon’s proud father began sending out demos of his first recordings which caught the attention of EMI’s head of A&R Craig Hawker who, in turn, offered him a development deal. Returning to the news, Szymon was inspired and began to develop his music, shaping his sound further by leaning new instruments and incorporating more singing into his work.
By the end of 2008 and at just 19, Szymon had compiled an album worth of songs and was on the verge of signing a record deal with EMI when his struggle with mental illness became too much and time had to be taken out for treatment. Throughout this time, however, he continued to write until the crippling effects of depression finally led him to quit music, whereby all of his compositions, finished and unfinished, were subsequently discarded.
Despite his best efforts to overcome and fight his illness, the darkness took hold and in December 2012 Szymon took his own life, he was just 23.
His legacy to this world is the music he created and this has been kept alive by his friends and family who have worked tirelessly toward sharing his work by releasing ‘Tigersapp’. With collaborations from EMI’s Craig Hawker and Mark Holland, this album was also partly mixed by Rusty Santos (Animal Collective, Owen Pallett) and Ian Pritchett (Angus & Julia Stone)
Szymon’s siblings said this of the album’s upcoming release: ‘Releasing Szymon’s album is bittersweet. We used to dream about playing with him and watching him play on stages. We finally now have the opportunity to release his music and we hope you enjoy it as much as we do’.
Today’s song is taken from ‘Tigersapp’ which will be available on 21st August via Eloper Music
