James Ramey, better known as Baby Huey & front man to The Babysitters, was just 26 years old when he died of a drug-related heart attack, he never got to finish his debut album.
A few months after his death his manager, together with Curtis Mayfield, began to piece together the work that Baby Huey had started on, also adding to it some instrumental tracks which had also been previously recorded. With this material they then managed to piece together an album which was released via Curtis Mayfield’s Curtom Recordsin 1971.
A quarter century after its release, The Baby Huey Story went on to become a cult classic among soul musicians and hip-hop fans with the album influencing early hip hop. Today’s song, “Hard Times” has been sampled many times by artists such as Ice Cube, A Tribe Called Quest and was also covered by John Legend & The Roots in 201
