James Hunter was born about an hour away from The Listening Post’s headquarters in Essex, UK but has travelled far ever since his music career began in 1986. The r&b singer-songwriter started out playing with a band called “Howlin’ Wilf and the Vee-Jays” recording several albums throughout the 90’s whilst playing across numerous clubs in London.
Hunter’s latest project sees the r&b artist team up with the mighty Daptone Records in what is to be his first album with the label. Produced by Gabriel Roth at Penrose Recorders (Daptone West), ‘Hold On!’ was released on 5th February 2016 and is a soulful treat from start to finish.
The whole album is fused together by a sound that is rooted in the late 50’s, early 60’s era with a nostalgic nod to the likes of Sam Cooke, Ray Charles and The Drifters, this is a place where soulful brass sections combine with the authentically rich textured vocals of James Hunter to create a sound that wonderfully blends pop, blues, jazz and rock.
‘Something’s Calling’ cried out to me today, plucking at my heart string with its soft bass line and feathery ‘heart-skips-a-beat’ rhythm section. Listen above.
