SONG OF THE DAY Willie West – I’m Still A Man (Lord Have Mercy)

0006639711_10Soul legend Willie West (Millard Leon West) was born just outside New Orleans in 1941 and has been singing and creating music ever 1959 when he was signed to the newly formed Rustone label.

His lifelong career has seen him work with the likes of The Meters and Allen Toussaint, whilst more recently he has emerged with a sound that is far deeper and much more raw than ever before.  His music has now entered a new realm where his songs have taken on a far more personal theme, both lyrically musically.

In 2014 Willie West visited Finland for the first time to perform material from his latest album ‘Lost Soul’, also visiting Finland-based retro funk & soul label Timmion Records whilst he was there.  From that session at Timmion studios West laid down a few lyrics and from that came a brand new track ‘I’m Still A Man.’  Bittersweet, lush vocals pour out over a heartfelt soulful melody and its hard not to be moved by this tender song.  Listen above.
