Currently I’m rockin’ to the brazen music of Brighton-based Strange Cages, their sound has brought a smile to my face and a swagger to my step. Tonight’s the night for good old-fashioned gritty punk, and what better way to unleash such a craving, this Brighton-based three-piece are just what I’m looking for!
Influenced by the classic sounds of the grand old garage days of the 60’s, the Strange Cages are influenced by the post-punk sounds of 13th Floor Elevators, The Stooges and Television to name a few and state that, “We love music that’s primal and menacing, anything twisted with a touch of evil. We are a garage/psych band with cruel intentions”.…hmm, just my cup of tea! This is a sound that lurks in the shadows and dwells on the flip side of the sunshiny flower-power idealisms of the 60’s, this is angst-driven, rowdy, raw garage-punk.
An epic live act, Strange Cages have previously supported the likes of King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, The Warlocks, White Lung and the Night Beats and have today released the full version ‘Catharsis,’ which the band first released back in January but, (as the band describe), “this is the full kraut-groove version complete with all the bullshit.”
Opening in a swirl of guitars and driving upbeat rhythm, the tensely packed intro sets a fast paced scene with the snarling opening line, “I swear I’m not jealous, I’m not a jealous person, I don’t believe that I’m bitter, I’m not a bitter person.” True to its name ‘Catharsis’ is song of purification and purgation, an unbridled rampage of intense, garage-punk mania, it’s fantastic! Listen above.
Be sure to check out their Soundcloud page, ‘Pony’ is a definite ‘must listen,’ as is ‘Desert’ (which I featured last May)
