Miss Lavelle White, also know as Miss LaVell, is a soul and blues artist who has been creating music for most of her life; her rich history as a singer and songwriter is matched by the music she makes today.
When she was just 12 she began to write poetry which soon led her song writing, and it was at this time that she also began singing gospel songs. At the age of 15 White has relocated to Houston, Texas where she began performing in the city’s blues clubs with a guitarist named Clarence Hollimon. This is where she was first spotted and her break came when Don Robey, the owner of Duke and Peacock records labels, was pointed in her direction. She was immediately snapped up, signed and then billed as ‘Miss La-Vell’ and went on to record 14 singles on Duke between 1958 and 1964.’
These singles included “If I Could Be with You,” “Just Look at You Fool,” “Stop These Teardrops,” “The Tide of Love” and, like most of her songs, were all self penned.
White’s talents as a songwriter and singer were notable throughout her career, with label mates Bobby “Blue” Bland, B.B. King, and Junior Parker all big fans! White also co-wrote Bobby Bland’s ‘Lead Me On’ which became a huge hit in 1960, though her contribution was credited to Deadric Malone, a pseudonym used by Don Romey!
Having released a significant discography of singles, most of which date back to the 1950’s and 60’s, it wasn’t until 1994 that she actually released her first full length self-titled album, it was a long time coming!
Today’s song was released in 1960 as the B-side to the single ‘Stolen Love’ which I featured on my blog last March. Titled ‘You’re The Most’ and released on the Duke label, I cannot tell you how overjoyed I am to find this on Youtube!! I have been searching for a copy of this song ever since I heard it on a random radio show months ago but I couldn’t find it anywhere…until now! I’d even tried to buy the single but even in poor condition this 7″ is still fetching good money, so I am so delighted that somebody has uploaded it at last! It is simply a fantastic track!! Listen above!
