GoGo Penguin are a Manchester three-piece known for their very unique art of blending together rhythmic break-beats, striking piano melodies and dynamic bass lines.
Inspired by the likes of Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, Massive Attack, Brian Eno and an array of modern classical composers such as Shostakovich and Debussy, this is a band who have successfully mashed together all the above…and made a sweet, sweet sound of their very own!
Working together to compose and create, the bands songwriting is a shared affair where ideas are of equal input. What also defines GoGo Penguin is the way in which they so smoothly fuse together electronica, trip-hop, jazz, rock and classical, the possibilities are limitless.
This is music that is delicate yet strong, constantly pushing at the boundaries of experimentation, closely examining the relationships of acoustic and electronic whilst always paying close attention to the small details of groove and feel. This is music to lose yourself and be lost in, or to simply put on in the background to tune into and out of, either way it has a very captivating quality.
Now signed to Blue Note Records, the band released their third album ‘Man Made Object’ earlier this year. Today’s song is taken from their second album, ‘v2.0’ which was produced by Matthew Halsall and released via Gondwana Records in 2014 and is titled, ‘To Drown In You.’ Totally sold by the fantastic percussive element, this song is a perfect balance of a gentle, sweet piano melody and a hustling, lively rhythm section, the contrast is electric.
