Mable John (sister to R&B singer Little Willie John) is a pioneering American blues vocalist who was the first female artist to be signed by Berry Gordy of Motown’s Tamla label in 1959.
After spending a few years performing with Motown, John left to join girl group The Realettes who, as well as providing backing vocals for Ray Charles, also released number of their own R&B singles.
In 1966 she re-embarked on a solo career, this time signing with Stax Records, and it was with this label that she recorded today’s funky little soul track, ‘Able Mable.’ This was to be her first Stax single of 1968, I love its great bluesy strut!
