SONG OF THE DAY Jain – Makeba

downloadA friend of mine had posted this video on her Facebook page today, describing it as ‘awesome,’ so I was naturally curious to see what she was talking about.

A few seconds in and I was hooked, this truly is awesome and this description applies to both the impressive and creative visual element of the video as well as the infectiously addictive vocals and melody of the song itself.

The lady behind this music is Jain, a singer-songwriter from France who has lived all over the world during her teens, from Dubai to the Republic of Congo and even South Africa, where the music video for today’s song ‘Makeba’ was filmed.  The song’s name is a reference to Miriam Makeba, a well-known South African civil rights activist who was also a singer and songwriter during the 50’s and 60’s.  When Jain’s mother used to play Makeba’s music at home she began to notice how different the African beats and rhythms were to that of the Middle East and Europe and this both intrigued and inspired her.

Jain released her first album, Zanaka on November 6, 2015 which was then certified as a Gold record in February 2016 and features today’s song.  Check out the colourful, inventive, expressive and truly original, ‘Makeba’ above.
