The Buttertones are a young LA-based, 5-piece who arrived in the winter of 2012 in a psychedelic haze of fuzzed-out garage rock, reviving the supersonic sounds of the 50’s and 60’s in a blast of melodic, retro reverence as they make their way.
I was lucky enough to stumble upon the kaleidoscopic sounds of The Buttertones in the summer of 2015 and have been a huge fan ever since. Consistently great, they have really excelled themselves with latest offering, Sadie’s A Sadist. This triumphant ball of mind-blowing mayhem strikes with lightning speed as it kicks off on a wave of twangy guitars, frantic surfy riffs and beats of hyper proportions. Jerky vocals propels the song forward even further with electrifying force, whilst the shriek of a snarling saxophone fires off in the background; the whole experience leaves you feeling rather invigorated to say the least.
Sadie’s A Sadist (I just love this title) is the first song to emerge from the band’s brand new album which is due at the end of March. Fuelled by the their love for movies, Gravedigging has been described on their Bandcamp page as, more a movie waiting to happen than an album—or a soundtrack just waiting to inspire a
movie, with scene after scene of action, tension and release’.
In an interview with the Brooklyn Vegan, band member Dakota Boettcher has described how, ‘We all love movies so much, when you listen to a soundtrack, it has peaks and it has lows, but it’s a whole journey. That’s what we want to do. We want you to go on a journey.”’
The accompanying video to today’s song has got that classic cult teen-movie feel to it, with Boettcher outlining the story, explaining how, The mission in the film featured is based entirely off of a real events. After an ex-CIA operative stole our secret plans for a cybernetic robot bartender/rhoomba we jumped into action. Some scenes might be dramatized for effect, but what you see in the film is essentially what unfolded that Tuesday afternoon. …OK…..whatever you say Buttertones! One thing’s for certain, this song and its action-packed movie are the perfect soundtrack to my Friday evening. Check it out above.
The band’s new album will be out March 31 via Innovative Leisure, I can’t wait! Meanwhile, check out the other quirky song titles from this release and pre-order your copy here.
