SONG OF THE DAY Tricky feat. Martina Topley-Bird – When We Die

When I saw this Tricky (feat. Martina Topley-Bird) track come up in a music feed today I felt a spark of excitement run down my spine and had to play it immediately.

When We Die is to feature on Tricky’s upcoming album Ununiform which releases this Autumn.  The album sees a welcome reunion between the father of trip-hop and his old-school compadre Martina Topley-Bird, who first got together in 1994 for Tricky’s (still one of my favourite albums) debut solo album, Maxinquaye.  In the following years after this release the pair continued to work together, both on a professional and personal level when in 1995 they had a daughter.

Now, over two decades later, the pair have reunited on Ununiform’s closing track and it feels like When We Die could almost pass as a long-lost bonus track from Maxinquaye.  The smouldering chemistry that was so potently present in their early days is still evident on this single and as a result it sounds just as fresh and convincing with no hint of replication.  Check it out above.

When We Die was released last Wednesday and is available to buy now from Tricky’s Bandcamp page here.
