SONG OF THE DAY Mermaidens – Satsuma

The Mermaidens are a psych/post-punk trio from New Zealand who have recently been signed to Flying Nun Records.

Receiving high praise for their 2014 debut EP and last year’s Undergrowth LP, the band fell under the Flying Nun’s radar and have just released their label-debut album, Perfect Body.

Their sound offers a mesmerising dip into the realms of dreamy psychedelia, with the voices of Gussie Larkin and Lily West embracing warm harmonies and hypnotic lyrics, entwined with dark and moody riff-based melodies, underpinned by Abe Hollingsworth’s fluid and dynamic percussion.

First single Satsuma is a wonderful contrast of mysterious-sounding, feather-light vocals and heavy, punctuated drums, the blend is striking and the balance a harmonious union.   Encapsulated in a menacing melody, the song effortlessly flows between loud and soft with equally compelling vocals declaring how, ‘you were sweet like satsuma, when i peeled you off and spit you in two.’  Check it out above and order your copy of Perfect Body from here.
