Now you could argue that any self-respecting Doors and Echo and the Bunnymen fan should know the fact I am about to share with you, but I’m afraid to say that I didn’t know until today, (anybody else out there didn’t know this, feel free to let me know!)
Most of us will know and love Echo and the Bunnymen’s cover of The Doors’ People are Strange. It was a single that the band recorded in 1987 for the soundtrack to one of my all-time favourite films, The Lost Boys. But what I didn’t know and appreciate is that Ray Manzarek himself was brought in to provide keyboards for the song!! Not only that, whilst in the studio, he also contributed keyboards to a re-recording of Bedbugs and Ballyhoo, which had previously been the B-side to the 12″ version of Bring on the Dancing Horses. This track was the third single from the band’s self-titled 5th album which also came out in 1987.
The song is driven by a very slick and sexy bass line, which definitely balances out the contrasting and far too happy chorus, but I like the transition, it makes the bass more prominent! Check out Bedbugs and Ballyhoo above.
