Nigerian-born Oluseun Anikulapo Kuti is the youngest son of the legendary afrobeat pioneer, Fela Kuti. Better known as Seun Kuti and now a proficient musician in his own right, Seun is both a saxophonist and vocalist who impressively took on his father’s role as the lead singer of Egypt 80 after his Fela passed away in 1997; at the time Seun Kuti was only 14!!!
Together as a band Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 have been releasing their music since 2008 and in March 2018 are due to release a new album titled Black Times. The record’s title track was released as the first single last Friday and features the unmistakable guitar work of special guest Carlos Santana. Based around an infectious mid-tempo Afrobeat groove, the track sees Seun calling for reflection and a collective focus on black history to energise and organise for the future: “We must pass the black knowledge to the future black God and Goddess”. Check it out above.
Black Times will be released on 2nd March 2018 on Strut Records. Pre-order the album here.
