I’ve read mixed reviews about Thee Oh Sees (or now just the Oh Sees) latest record, Smote Reverser, so when a very good friend sent me a link to the new album last night, I’ve made a point of working my way through it..though as yet I’m only halfway through!.
Following last November’s Orc and last August’s Memory of a Cut Off Head, the OCS’ (as they are also known) latest offering starts off on a high with Sentient Oona: five minutes of hushed vocals, rolling drums and a pensive melody..that is until the chorus strikes and then it all gets a bit lively, guitars wail and drums gather in crashing crescendo’s. The track then falls back once more, stripped down to accented beats and melodic ‘ooh’s’ and kind of flips between loud and soft, cool in its transition and completely satisfying to the ears as the tune gets right under the skin…well, that’s where its found itself with me..I can only recommend you take a listen and see where it takes you..Check it out above.
Smote Reverser is approximately the 20th studio album from The/Thee/Oh Sees/OCS and is out now on John Dwyer’s own Castle Face Records..grab yourself a copy of that from here.
