Screamin’ Jay Hawkins earned his title as the pioneer of shock rock through lavish operatic performances, incorporating the weird and wonderful into his shows with the help of ghoulish props and all things macabre. His unique antics on stage eluded to voodoo, with the sight of skulls and trinkets both a controversial and enticing addition to his already dramatic stage presences.
His career spanned over nearly five decades, but the late fifties and early sixties were considered the most successful period of his lengthy career and it was on his 1966 The Night And Day Of album that today’s tremendous offering hails. In My Dream melts into a crooning lament with the pained wails of Hawkins hollering over fluttering cymbals and a tormented blues melody…it’s a bit of heart breaker and I challenge you not to feel a pang anguish as you make your way through this beauty…
