The warbling quiver of Jeffrey-Lee Pierce’s vocals and the melancholic howls of wispy guitars gives Mother of the Earth a haunting sound, and if you’re not already absorbed in a swirl of sadness by the intro alone, then the opening lines “I’ve gone down the river of sadness I’ve gone down the river of pain in the dark” will surely lead you into more wistful realms.
LA’s The Gun Club featured today’s song on their second album, Miami, which was released in 1982 on Animal Records; a label (I discovered today) that was owned by Blondie’s guitarist, Chris Stein (who also produced the record)….and here’s a rather interesting fact about: Debbie Harry also made an appearance on the album as a backing singer, featuring on several tracks under the pseudonym, D.H. Laurence Jr!!..
