SONG OF THE DAY Ruth Brown – Sure Nuff

Sometimes known as the “Queen of R&B”, Ruth Brown’s musical career was extensive and spanned (off an on) for nearly 60 years! Originally recording for Atlantic Records I especially love the early stuff she recorded in the late 50’s-early 60’s, with songs like So Long, Teardrops from My Eyes, (Mama) He Treats Your Daughter Mean and (one of my favourites) I Don’t Know securing both Brown and Atlantic Records a solid place in R&B history.   For these songs, Atlantic became known as “the house that Ruth built” (alluding to the popular nickname for the old Yankee Stadium).

Released in 1960 Sure Nuff is bold and sassy with Brown’s vocals a piercing cherry on this very perky cake of R&B goodness! It’s sprightly and catchy with enthusiastic backing vocals melodically responding to her enamoured calls as a bass line paces about all cool and collected in the background…Check it out above…It’s good to be back!!
