SONG OF THE DAY Merle Kilgore – Start All Over Again

Better known as (just) Merle Kilgore, Wyatt Merle Kilgore was a songwriter, guitarist actor and manager born in Oklahoma in 1934.  Possibly best known for his songwriting skills, Kilgore was just 18 when wrote his first number one hit!  More and More was recorded by Webb Pierce in the early 1950’s and this penned masterpiece was to be followed by many more successes in the years to come!  He also wrote the 10-million selling Wolverton Mountain, which was recorded by Claude King and his biggest hit, co-written by June Carter Cash, was Johnny Cash’s Ring Of Fire.  In the early 1960’s he toured with Cash as part of his package show and even stood as Johnny Cash’s best man at his wedding to June Carter!

Today’s song was released on US label, Imperial Records and appeared as the b-side to his 1959 hit, Ride Jesse Ride.  I love Kilgore’s pained crooning throughout and the way his voice swoops down low before soaring high into the anguished-filled chorus as  lyrics declare, “I’m tired, tired, tired of always feeling blue/Can’t get over losing you, yes/ Gonna go to some strange town and start all over again….”   Check it out above.
