Coming together in the early 1970’s, The Undisputed Truth were assembled by songwriter/producer Norman Whitfield so that he could experiment with his psychedelic soul techniques. Featuring Joe “Pep” Harris as main lead singer, Billie Rae Calvin and Brenda Joyce Evans provided additional leads and background vocals. Over the years the band experienced quite a rotation of members but this was the original line-up!
Second album, Face to Face with the Truth, was released in 1971 amidst an era where psychedelic riffs and dark brooding funk rhythms began to seep into soul music. The album inspired a new consciousness of sound that many bands followed and even though The Undisputed Truth were a little overlooked, they helped carve out a new groove in world of funk! It was from their early singles that Whitfield’s main act, The Temptation’s took some of their hits; one of which was a cover of today’s song which you can listen to here.
Ungena Za Ulimwengu (Unite The World) / Friendship Train offers just over eight minutes of pure, unruffled soul. The groove is smooth and sedate, whilst lyrics impose something a little stronger in its message, urging “We” to “unite the world”…..It’s a slow burner that seeps into the pores and gets under the skin and a song, I’m sure you would agree, that could be deemed quite apt for the troubled times we find ourselves amidst…?!! Check it out above.
