SONG OF THE DAY The Growlers – Lonely This Christmas

The Growlers return for Snow Ball 3 on Dec. 22 at the Wiltern – buzzbands.laI guess many people may be finding it hard to feel festive this year with all that’s going on?! Hell, I find it hard to feel festive most years, but I hope that goodwill and an element of cheer will hopefully penetrate though these tough times and touch us all?

So, this is my Christmas offering! Brooks Nielson and the Growlers performing this amusing rendition of the Mud classic, Lonely This Christmas. All of the recording for this is taken from a 2016 Christmas show at The Wiltern and features an accompanying choir too!!

As we all know, Lonely This Christmas was originally written and produced by Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman and recorded by Mud.  It was Mud’s second number one single in the UK, spending four weeks at the top in December 1974 and January 1975 and contrary to what I’d always thought (and several incorrectly-labelled videos on Youtube), Elvis never recorded this song – though it was often performed in the style of Elvis Presley’s slower songs from later in his career! I never knew that!

Apart from the fact I love the Growlers immensely, what also makes this rendition rather special are witty lyrics such as: “I have that fire fuckin’ chicken waitin’ for you/
And an ice cold mug of beer..” and (this one tickled me) “Santa you can expect a Christmas present from me/Karate chop if I find out that you kissed her..”  I doubt Mud ever did a karate chop sound effect mid-song!!

Thank you Growlers for spreading some much needed Christmas cheer!! Listen above and check out the live performance of the song below – I’ve even included the full lyrics!

Happity happity happity happity holidays (as Brooks Nielson would say) and I will see you all very soon!

Alright
Merry Christmas everybody
Happity happity happity happity holidays

Try to imagine a house that’s not a home
Try to imagine a Christmas all alone
That’s where I’ll be
Since you left me
My tears could melt the snow
What can I do
Without you
No place, no place to go

It’ll be lonely this Christmas
Without you to hold
It’ll be lonely this Christmas
Lonely and cold
It’ll be cold so cold
Without you to hold
This Christmas

Each time I remember the night you bailed on me
And how I remember how I cried myself to sleep
I just break down, as I look around
And the only thing I see
Is loneliness and emptiness
And an unlit Christmas Tree

It’ll be lonely this Christmas
Without you to hold
It’ll be lonely this Christmas
Lonely and cold
It’ll be cold so cold
Without you to hold
This Christmas

It’s me, Elvis Santa
Just like every other year
I have that fire fuckin’ chicken waitin’ for you
And an ice cold mug of beer
I hope you have your favourite channel on
Infomercials as seen on TV
Maybe I should stop beating around the bush
Or shall I say, Christmas tree?

Santa, please find my baby
And could you tell her that I really miss her?
Santa, you can expect a Christmas gift from me:
A karate chop, if I found out that you kissed her
Hyah!

It’ll be lonely this Christmas
Without you to hold
It’ll be so very lonely
Lonely and cold
It’ll be lonely this Christmas
Without you to hold
It’ll be lonely this Christmas
Lonely and cold
It’ll be cold so cold
Without you to hold
This Christmas

Merry Christmas, baby, wherever you are
