SONG OF THE DAY Los Saicos – Come On

Considered one of the most original and influential Latin American bands of the 1960’s, Los Saicos were a pioneering Peruvian Garage/Proto Punk band from Lima, Peru.

When they first emerged there were many groups trying to imitate the style and sounds of British psych pop, but Los Saicos decided to go against the grain and didn’t follow the masses.  They sang in Spanish, composed their own music and never deviated from their own style! This proved to be a winning path for the band as their sounds have earned them the recognition as being global pioneers in punk rock!  In a short space of time during the 1960’s they became one of the most successful groups in their own country, fashioning a unique surf-influenced garage sound that would shape certain aspects of the later punk rock movement of the 70’s.

There are many myths about the name Los Saicos, but guitarist/vocalist Erwin Flores initially suggested Los Sádicos, but then they decided to eliminate the “D”, leaving Saicos – this word referring to the word “psycho” (and to Seiko watches very popular at that time!!).  As well as writing all of their own songs, Los Saicos are sometimes mentioned as the first South American band to record exclusively their own material; releasing six singles between 1965 and 1966. With the best known tracks including the likes of Demolición, Fugitivo de Alcatraz and El Entierro de los Gatos; these have become anthems in Peruvian rock and, over time, have led to the recognition of the band worldwide. Though they broke up in 1966, Los Saicos re-united in 2006 and have since continued to play occasional venues!!  Why have I never stumbled upon these until recently!!!!

Released in 1965, Come On b/w Ana was their first 45 released on the Peruvian label, DisPerú.  Vocals are gruff and raw, the melody is tinged with edgy melancholy and the tone is dark!.. I LOVE it!!! Check it out above.
