SONG OF THE DAY Tampo – Keumgang

My musical travels have today taken me to Helsinki, from which a chance finding has got me investigating an interesting fusion of Latin Jazz-inspired, Finnish psychedelic folk!

Tampo are a mystic sextet whose sound is inspired by the Latin jazz, particularly cumbia and mambo. From what I can see this group have been making music for over ten years, originally releasing on the Helmi Levyt label.  Later this summer, Helsinki’s We Jazz Records are to issue two cuts from an album originally released in 2017: Keumgang b/w Tampomambo.

A defining feature of Keumgang is it’s highly rousing percussion, something that never goes unnoticed with me and something I’ll always home in on! The brass section adds a a vibrant, vast and warm jazzy layer, whilst the main body sways to a Latin-tinged melody. As We Jazz Records perfectly describes, this is “a solid choice for all lovers of psychedelic music with character”… Check it out above and grab yourself a copy from here
