SONG OF THE DAY Mimis Plessas – Vassilikos (Dance of Epirus)

What an absolute treat I have for you today!!!!! I heard this recently immediately fell in love with this divine piece of g

I’ve been trying to work out whether Dance of Epirus was released in 1967 on an album called Greece Goes Modern. It’s hard to work out as most of the track listing and information isn’t written in English, but I’m going to go with 1967 for now – please anyone correct me if I’m wrong!

This outstanding and truly unforgettable song was written and performed by Mimis Plessas (GreekΜίμης Πλέσσας), a Greek composer born in Athens in 1924.  He began his long and prolific career in 1952 and has written music for over 100 films, television, radio and theatre!!  He has worked with such notable Greek singers as Nana MouskouriGiannis PoulopoulosMarinellaRena Koumioti and lyricist Lefteris Papadopoulos and released a large number of albums over several decades. Known and revered for creating his own style of sound, Plessas combinedf the traditions of entehno and laïkó into his music and did so with considerable success! His composition work O Dromos in 1969 (The Street) still remains the work with the most sales in the history of the Greek discography!!!

In 2001 he was honoured with the Gold Cross of the Order of the Phoenix (this is an honour bestowed by the Greek government to Greek citizens who have excelled in the arts and literature, science, public administration, shipping, commerce, and industry).

All I can say is that Mimis Plessas’ other albums are anything like Greece Goes Modern, I can’t wait to hear more!!…you may just see another song or two pop up over the coming weeks! Listen and enjoy above.
