Today’s offering is another one of those rarities that comes from a band who came and went in a flash, leaving just a couple of 45’s in their wake!
Upheval were a 9-piece Wisconsin outfit who formed whilst behind bars, cutting a series of live recordings over a few days in 1979. Several of the group members had no musical training before entering prison, which is rather impressive given the quality of the music they created!! They also managed to build up a good reputation through concerts for inmates, the local public and radio, which was no easy feat given their situation!!
Upheaval only had one release to their name and that was today’s Paradise Lost, (backed with Now That You’re Gone). This 45 was issued on their self-titled ‘Love’ label and it is said that only 25 copies are thought to have been originally pressed, with even less surviving to the present day!!
In 2016, London Label, Symphonical Records (a specialist label dedicated to reviving and releasing unissued cuts from back in the day) released a double-sider of two previously unreleased tracks by the group, both of which were also which were recorded inside Waupun Correctional Institution!
Come On With the Come On (backed with T.L.C) was issued for the first time all those years later thanks to this label and I love more of this rare material is now finally out there! I also love that this band went into prison with no musical experience/ability, and somehow managed to form to cut a few songs whilst serving time! It’s pretty special and I’m glad their second 45 was finally released!! Listen above.
