SONG OF THE DAY Elvis – My Baby’s Gone

Secondary, 2 of 2I never need much encouragement to put some Elvis on, but watching that new Baz Luhrmann film tonight has put Elvis at the forefront of my mind. I always wonder how things would have panned out for Elvis had he not left Sam Phillips? Where would he have ended up and would he still be here? Most of the Elvis I love comes from his early/Sun recordings and today’s song is a special one in that it was one of his earliest (if not the earliest) recordings, but it never released at the time.

Laid-down in 1953/4, My Baby’s Gone was made for his mother and was the result of one of Elvis’ very first Sun Sessions. This slow melodious number was deemed by Sam Philips to be too bluesy at the time, so never saw the light of day regretfully, but it has since been reissued.

I love it, I love all this early stuff! This is Elvis at his finest!!  Enjoy!
