SONG OF THE DAY The Dixie Hummingbirds – Space Ships

R-4165937-1391615142-4149With a career that has stretched over a number of decades (albeit with some member changes/additions) The Dixie Hummingbirds have helped to evolve the sound of Gospel music over the years! Not only has this band significantly shaped the genre, but they have influenced and infiltrated emerging music styles such as R&B, Doo-Wop, Rock’n’Roll, Soul and Hip-Hop!

Founded in 1928 by 12-year-old James Davis and his classmates, the band found fame when Ira Tucker became its lead singer in 1938. Soon after, the group were signed to Decca Records and began making beautiful songs with glorious vocal harmonies. Driven by the hard-singing style of gospel music’s 1940s and 1950s golden age, this sound was pioneering and soulful!

Over the years The Dixie Hummingbirds have performed and collaborated with the likes of Stevie Wonder and Paul Simon and have released an impressive repertoire of albums and singles. Their story (as outlined here), “…..is a tale of determined young men who navigated the troubled waters of racial division and the cutthroat business of music on the strength of raw talent, vision, character, and perseverance, and made an indelible name for themselves in American cultural history...”

Space Ships is one of their 1970’s tracks, released in 1973 and featuring on a record called, Who Are We. It’s hard to forget this song once you’ve heard it because right from the very start when that soaring vocal melody warbles its way into your ears, I can almost guarantee you will be hooked. It’s power translates into an ethereal sonic charm that tunefully resonates. Vocal harmonies captivate throughout as piano embellishments add a vibrant dynamic. This is smooth and soulful and I’m happy to be sharing this spirited delight this evening! Enjoy!
