This is definitely one purchase to shout about, there’s a bit of everything in this compilation with its fascinating, eclectic selection of old r&b; it says exotica on the tin and exotic is exactly what you get!
Released at the end of June, this compilation is brought to you courtesy of Captain High Records and combines the first two volumes from their Exotic Blues & Rhythm” compilation series named “Katanga!” and “Ahbe Casabe!” with two additional bonus tracks.
This album is a kaleidoscopic garden of delights consisting of R’n’B and rock’n’roll based songs from the 1940’s to the early 1960’s, all of which have this slightly exotic, dark and mystical feeling from the melody structures and instrumentation.
Kip Tyler released ‘Shadow Street ‘ in 1957 as the B-side to his single ‘She Got Eyes’and this is just one of the many wonderfully chosen tracks to appear on this album. Listen above.
From start to finish “Katanga! Ahbe Casabe: Exotic Blues & Rhythm Vol. 1 & 2” is a thrilling listen, but don’t take my word for it, check it out for yourself here.
