SONG OF THE DAY The Universals – New Generation

The beauty and the travesty to today’s song is that there was only two tracks ever released by this band!!

Featuring on some obscure funk compilations, this track is far from forgotten, however.  In 2007 producer and DJ Will Quantic teamed up with the Jazzman Records to put together a selection of some of the rarest Funk 45’s ever recorded. “The World’s Rarest Funk 45’s” series unearthed some mighty fine funk rarities and amongst this wealth of super-cool sounds was New Generation by The Universals.

Hailing from Daytona Beach, Florida, The Universals were active in the 70’s, but only released one 45 in 1970 which was came out on the Expression label – which still fetches in the realms of £40 should you be lucky enough to stumble upon a copy!  The A-side, The Way a Girl Should Be, is surprisingly hard to get hold of with no versions appearing online anywhere, but the flip-side is where its at!!  New Generation is the song that seems to be what the band are known for and if you check it out above you will see why!  Deep-groove funk at its finest, with plenty of heavy bass, soulful vocals and snippets of melodic flute mixed in at just the right point and in the perfect quantity to maximise and embellish the whole sound.

It’s one smooth and well-deserved treat for a wet and haily (its hailing here) Saturday!! Enjoy!!
