The late L.A. session guitar genius Jerry Cole has long been revered for his work with everyone from the Beach Boys and the Byrds to Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley. In addition to leading surf gods the Spacemen it has now been discovered that he was also the driving force behind the Animated Egg, a fictitious band whose only self-titled 1967 LP is now known as one of the greatest psychedelic exploitation (“psychsploitation”) records to ever hit the record shops – and, indeed, many DJs and collectors.
The Animated Egg were a studio-only group that issued a self-titled album of psychedelic instrumentals in the late ’60s. It’s now known that the chief instigator behind the Animated Egg was LA’s session guitarist Jerry Cole and through his fuzzy leads, latin-touches and surfy riffs he has left a lasting impression in the world of instrumental psychedelic sounds.
Featuring on his one and only record comes Sock It My Way, a dreamy feast of mesmerising, piercing melodies all bound together by a steady, hypnotic rhythm. Broody and otherworldly in its delivery, its curious and exploratory nature makes for a very intriguing listen…Check it out above.
