SONG OF THE DAY Utheo Choerer – Stiv Kuling

Known for their “top-notch productions,” Norway’s Lyskestrekk Records are a small label with big offerings! Pushing anything from psych, soul, breaks, funk and disco, one of their latest offerings is a label debut from a rather enigmatic artist!

Writer and composer Utheo Choerer released his first single last month and it would seem that these intriguing instrumentals are just as mysterious as the man who created them!  Side A is entitled Foreste Gir and is a heavy jazz-funk groove featuring B.Havnes on sax,  M.Bjørneboe on bass and O. Gravklev on bongos and fills! The single was recorded for Lyskestrekk Records at Hausmania Oslo and the artwork’s pretty cool too!

On the flip is Stiv Kuling, a track which has been described by the label as a “mystique mountain vibe”…There is certainly a hefty amount of the mystique entwined in this enthralling song that’s for sure.  With a little touch of the ethio-jazz a la Mulatu Astatke style, the track starts with nothing but this heavy, hypnotic beat and as bongos embellish with their crisp tones, the rhythm draws you into a spellbinding grip. It builds and drops, whisking you away to an exotic soundscape that feels slightly ominous but equally as alluring!  Check it out above.
