Smooth as silk and like a coaxing stroke to the inner ear, this is just the pace for me today. This track really is a delight in all its unhurried glory. The drums roll like gentle thunder, heralding a storm that is yet to come, but all is still quiet in this moment. Lush keys adorn the bluesy melody like a posh belt, holding it all together, whilst vocals are hushed (and for some reason keep making me think of Dusty Springfield) and oh-so-elegant.
Send Her Home was written by Canadian singer-songwriter David Henry Thomsett, better known as David Clayton-Thomas. Issued in 1965, it featured as the B-side to the very contrasting and upbeat treat that is Take Me Back and was released when Thomas was performing with Canadian band, The Shays.
Over the years David Clayton-Thomas has performed in various bands and is probably best known for his being the lead singer for Blood Sweat And Tears – whom he formed two years after today’s song was released. As well as being a singer, he has also performed as a solo artist and as a songwriter and many of his his songs have been covered by the likes of Shirley Bassey, James Brown, Chet Baker, Bobbie Gentry and Peggy Lee (to name a few). I never knew this until today! I’ve also found some additional information that you may find interesting, charting his life and how he came to music, find that here.
So, as I sit and watch the sun sink into a the glowing horizon, I find this mellow little number blissfully washing over me and make a mental note to call upon this one when I need a little serenity….Enjoy!
