SONG OF THE DAY Whatitdo Archive Group – The Black Stone Affair (Main Theme)

Forging a sound cut from the vast desert landscapes of Nevada, Reno-based band Whatitdo Archive Group create a sizzling sound known and revered as cinematic library funk.

Issuing their debut album in 2021, The Black Stone Affair was marketed as “a long lost soundtrack to an Italian cinematic masterpiece”  – and authentically it lives up to its name! Capturing this vintage sound perfectly, the record explores the trim delicacies of soft jazzy lounge/exotica, the sweltering suspense of high-action funk and the heady interludes of big fat beats and intense cinematic melodies. It’s a swirl of textures.

Consisting of Aaron Chiazza, Alexander Korostinsky and Mark Sexton, the band creates a sound that pays homage to the likes of Martin Denny, Les Baxter, Roy Budd, Ennio Morricone (in particular). Together they have mastered the craft of capturing the essence of this classic sound….and if you didn’t know better, you would never believe this is just two years old!

The band have just released new album Palace Of A Thousand Sounds. I’ve not had chance to listen to it fully yet, but I have to say that if you are going to listen to either one of their albums, you really need to play all songs from start to finish. These sonic stories really need to be enjoyed in their entirety, just as you would if you were listening to these tracks as they play out on a film. Each song creates imagery, building the story, and all you have to do is press play and allow this to tap into your imagination! It won’t take long, I promise. This music sucks you in!

Today’s song introduced me to wonders of Whatitdo Archive Group and is the title track to their debut album. It’s hard not to be absorbed by this sweet slice of heady cinematic funk and I love how those heavy beats are so hypnotic and commanding! Enjoy – and if you fancy checking out all of the album, you can find that below…
