Betty Jean Champion, a.k.a Bettye Swann, had a beautiful voice and celebrated a career in music that spanned over 15 years. A completely understated artist, she first surfaced during the early 1960’s as a member of the Fawns, before embarking on a solo career in 1964.
One of her first 45’s introduced the soulful delights of Don’t Wait Too Long, which was one of the early tracks issued in a series of Arthur Wright-produced singles for the independent LA label, Money Records. Make Me Yours became the title track for her first and only album for Money and issued in 1967, but a year later she struck it big and moved to major label, Capitol – from which she released two more albums.
Today’s song was a B-side to her Don’t Wait Too Long 45 and I love this because it steers ever so slightly away from straight-up soul and masters a real sultry, blues-based sound. It’s a beauty, what more can I say? Enjoy!
