Today’s song is an (almost) forgotten rare little gem from the 1960’s. Only featuring (I believe) on a compilation entitled V/A- Baltimore’s Teen Beat A Go Go, the record was issued on the ultra-rare early 60’s Dome Records in 1966 – and went out of print almost immediately.
The compilation was produced by Joey Welz (is this the same Joey Welz as the pianist who played with Bill Haley & His Comets??) and showcases 16 bands that were heavily active around the Baltimore area in the early to mid Sixties. Artists includes bands like the Nightwalkers, Beggars, the Fabulous Monarchs, the Roadrunners, Executioners, Amoebas, Week-enders, the Rysing Suns, Chadwicks, Destinations and more.
These were the bands that helped create the Baltimore sound, focusing on big beat R&B and traditional Rock ‘n Roll. I think that most of the bands on this record only ever recorded one song – which is what makes this compilation even more interesting. One of these bands were The Amoebas and they definitely (sadly) fall into that category of ‘one hit’ wonders!
Look At The Moon is a real pleasant listen. Different to the ‘typical’ sound of that time, it not heavy garage, its not jangly pop, but its got all the charm of this era – and it stands out because its got that something ‘different’ about it. This is the only “studio” recording that was ever made, which is a crying shame! I don’t even think there was a 45 or a b-side, but thank goodness this track was rescued from oblivion and included in this cool compilation! Check the track out above.
