SONG OF THE DAY Zapata – Do Your Thing

PrimaryIssued in 1972 on a small Latin/Soul label from Antonio, Texas called Metro-Dome Records, today’s song is one of the few occasions when I actually prefer the cover to the original!

Initially released by Isaac Hayes a year earlier, Do Your Thing is a fine slice of funk! It’s a song that lends itself well to either male or female vocals too, with other notable covers being recorded by the likes of the Temptations, Lyn CollinsBuddy Guy and Bette Smith to name a few – there have been at least a dozen covers over the years!

As for the artist behind today’s cover, Zapata is something of a mystery! Also credited for his work with a band called Little Jr. Jesse & His Tear Drops, the material he’s released here seems to be a lot more straight soul orientated. Under Zapata,he did put out a few 45’s, but none of these even seem to be available anywhere, not even on Youtube! So, the mystery that is Zapata shall go unsolved…at least for now!!

What I can share before I sign off is a cool compilation that today’s track features on! Many moons ago in 2002, Jazzman Records released a record called Texas Funk: Hard Texas Funk 1968-1975 as part of their Jazzman Funk Compilation series.

It’s definitely a cool listen if you fancy continuing on with today’s funky adventures? Check this out below!
