SONG OF THE DAY Yin Yin – The Year of the Rabbit

Sooooo many times have Yin Yin appeared on on my radar and yet I’ve never featured on of their tracks!! Time to change that!

Hailing from Holland’s southernmost city of Maastricht, YĪN YĪN emerged back in 2019 with the Thai psych-rock influenced album, The Rabbit that Hunts Tigers, which was followed up in 2022 with the more spiritual and cosmic sounding, The Age of Aquarius.

Exploring the realms of the psychedelic, YĪN YĪN are greatly inspired by rhythm and world music influences. Yes, that does seem rather a general summary I appreciate, but this band have explored the sounds of Southeast Asian psychedelia and Japanese instrumental folk, so geographic boundaries have no bearing. This is a band who are not afraid to experiment, also combining touches of Kraftwerk, surf, soul and disco into their kaleidoscopic melting pot!

Early in 2024 the band are to release their third album, Mount Matsu, which has been described as their most adventurous project yet! The Year of The Rabbit is a single taken from this upcoming record which, released in 2023, is an apt offering as this is the year of the Rabbit! It’s warm melody is fresh and enticing, throwing tidy little beats amidst what the band have descried as “City pop and Japanese instrumental folk (sōkyoku)”. It’s got a cool sound!

Check it out above and if you want to hear more (and pre-order their new album), you can find this on their Bandcamp page, here.
