Today’s song is a little rarity that I’ve not been able to pinpoint to a release date, nor have I been able to locate too much information about the band behind it. What I have been able to find out, however, is that this song appears on a cool compilation by Soundway records called The Original Sound Of Cumbia: The History Of Colombian Cumbia & Porro As Told By The Phonograph 1948-79. Issued in 2011, this superb release contains 55 tracks from that era and what I intend to do as soon as I’ve posted this is go listen to those 55 songs!! How exciting!!!
Delving into South America’s rich musical past, The Original Sound of Cumbia was compiled and researched by Will Holland, a.k.a Quantic and took five years of long hard study to create!! What a completely fantastically cool project to have done!!!
Sangre Goajira was first issued on a 78 press, via a Colombian label from Medellin called Discos Colombia. I guess that gives us a slightly better indicator of the release date as the last 78 was made in 1959 – so this track was created sometime before then!! It’s got a dear little tune to it that really gets into your head and, with its laid-back rhythm, rich vocal layers and warm horn embellishments, it’s likely to stay in your head for a while? It certainly has mine!
Check it out above and if you fancy taking a deeper look into Soundway’s compilation, you can find it below! Enjoy!
