SONG OF THE DAY The Migs – Pretty Ricky

One of the things that makes me so fond of anything garage-rock (albeit past or present) is the rawness! No frills, no overproduction, no need!! Just a wilderness of twangy guitars and lost minds!

I’ve had a couple of The Migs’ songs in a few playlists for a while now, but after hearing them again today and realising they had never made it to the LP pages, I knew that had to change!!

Hailing from (or, at the time based in) New Hampshire, US, The Migs are something of a mysterious bunch! Coming together just over a decade ago, some of their earliest recordings on their Bandcamp page dates back to 2011. I don’t know what happened to them, but releases ceased after the self-issued Whatever Forever album – which I’ve pasted below for your listening pleasure! And what a listening pleasure it is! It’s also worth mentioning that should you enjoy this record, its still available (here) for a “Name Your Price” offer!!

I wish I could tell you more about The Migs, I wish they were still releasing! I did try to contact them via their Facebook page to see why they stopped recording, so if they get back to me, I’ll be sure to report back on here!! I love this sound and love how it proves that good music is good, no matter how expensively or modestly produced it is!! This band are testament to the latter and the only thing I can really criticise about them is that they just disappeared! Where did they go and why were more people not talking about them at the time?? This crazy-good, psyched-out madness is fuelled by a humble DIY ethic and this, for me, is what music is really about! Stripped-down, proper, organic sonic thrills in all its homemade glory!!

I’ve changed my mind a few times with regards to what song to feature tonight and have reverted to the one I didn’t expect to like as much, but the softness of Pretty Ricky provides a real nice contrast to the glorious madness of some of the other songs and really reminds me of the Allah-Las – both bands emerged at a similar time interestingly!

This whole album is an unpolished delight, packed full of tasty psychedelic treats! One that I wholly endorse and recommend you indulge in from start to finish! Enjoy!!
