If ever an adventure could indulge upon the most perfect terrain, it would be that of a drum safari!! The swanky march of these monster beats hit hard as their swagger dominates this sonic skyline like rhythmic boulders This tune is all about the rhythm and that’s why I love it so!
Issued in 1962 on a US label called GNP Crescendo, Drum’s Safari was recorded by Lester Brown, Jr., better known as Les Brown, Jr. Specialising in jazz and big band, this artist was accompanied by His Band of Renown and celebrated a musical career that spanned over six decades (from 1938-2000). Together with his band, Les Brown, Jr performed all over the world, issuing an array of albums and singles in this time.
In the 1960’s, as well as hosting a national radio show, Brown also acted in various TV shows (Gunsmoke, General Hospital, The Baileys of Balboa, Gilligan’s Island) and took to music production – which later got him working with Carlos Santana. Not just content with this level of expertise, he also promoted many country music artists including Merle Haggard and Loretta Lynn and in 2004 he received the “Ambassador of Patriotism” award from the POW Network…..
Drum’s Safari backed the equally percussive Swingin’ and Surfin’ on the B-side, completing what is one of the most rhythmic 45’s I’ve heard in a while! Check it out above!
