SONG OF THE DAY Ruy Mingas – Mona Ami Kibala

R-3803934-1345056106-8964Today’s exceedingly delicious song comes to you courtesy of Ruy Alberto Vieira Dias Rodrigues Mingas, better known as Ruy Mingus. Angola-born, this singer, composer, diplomat, businessman and politician had a varied life when it came to his career. His political role saw him as a deputy in the Angolan parliament and a secretary with the status of Minister of Sports and ambassador of Angola to Portugal. His musical career celebrated a wealth of compositions (of which one was the music for the National Anthem of Angola) and throughout his home country he became one one of its most famous musicians and performers.

Emerging in the late 1950’s, Mingas was a pioneer in African music, mixing elements of of his Afro-Portuguese heritage with jazz and Latin music – while addressing political themes of the day. His care and attention to such current matters made him not only a popular musician, but also a leader to his people! His musical creations poured out through is gentle vocals and intricate guitar playing – of which all of his recordings were released throughout the early-to-mid-1970’s.

Mona Ami Kibala appeared on his 1970 debut record, Angola Canções Por Rui Mingas. I love the dynamics of this song and the way the tempo changes about halfway in, introducing an unexpected boost from which the song propels into a lively fireball of dance-inducing magic! It’s a little beauty! Check it out above and enjoy!
