SONG OF THE DAY Wasucha (วาสุชา) – Phleng Khon Dong

PrimaryWhen it comes finding something that’s completely original, utterly quirky and instantly memorable, I think this song will tick all of these boxes and beyond! The vocal sounds, the sheer uniqueness and the unforgettable impression it leaves on the senses is something that I’m happy to be shouting about…or at least writing about!

I heard this track on a radio show a short while ago and immediately sought out who was responsible for this four minutes of random psych-bliss! Turns out that this rare psych-folk corker dates back to the late 1970’s/1980 and was recorded by a Thai artist called Wasucha. Some sources state that this was a band, whilst others suggest it was just one artist, but all report that this band/artist came together in 1977 – with the support of Nakhon Thanomsap and Kulchat Thephasadin Na Ayutthaya. Its members are Somchai Rasamee, Yongsak Rasmee, Wisut Srichomngam, Witthaya Uamsa-at, Orasa Phonchan and Chonthicha Niamthan.

ยาอียายาแย่  (“medicine, īyā, bad medicine”) was the title of their/his one and only album and its release date is hard to find, so if anyone knows? It’s definitely collectible though and currently fetches over £100 for a copy! Phleng Khon Dong appears on this record and its bonkers…but in a GOOD way! Tell me this doesn’t get into your head and show me anything that even comes remotely close to sounding like this. Full of strange howls and addictive vocal lines, tribal rhythms and an assortment of percussive delights, this songs inhabits a world of its own…its beautifully bizarre!! Enjoy…and if you fancy investigating the rest of the record, I’ve pasted that below!
