Nigerian multi-instrumentalist, musician and composer Fela Kuti has often been described as one of Africa’s most “challenging and charismatic music performers.” Hailed as a “superstar, singer, musician, Panafricanist, polygamist, mystic, legend,” Kuti was also a human rights activist and political extremist, also well-known and recognised as the pioneer of Afrobeat musis.
I stumbled upon a collection his early recordings on Bandcamp today and had a little listen, these recordings were made between 1963 and 1969 today and include the funky sounds of ‘I Know Your Feeling.’ This collection is said to ‘provide unique insight into the beginnings of Kuti’s craft. Koola Lobitos, (Koola Lobitos was the prototype band Fela Kuti set-up before changing the name to Africa 70 in 1970), were the first expression of Kuti’s incredible talent and the start of his musical evolution that led to the Afrobeat movement’. Listen to the groovin’ sounds of ‘I Know Your Feeling’ above and check out the rest of ‘Highlife-Jazz & Afro-Soul’ here.
I couldn’t help but share another great track from Fela Kuti, recorded in 1975 this is the great “Everything Scatter”:
