SONG OF THE DAY Effi Duke & The Love Family – The Time Is Come

Brighton-based Mr Bongo will be releasing Mr Bongo Record Club Volume Two this November, their second compilation album which will pick up where Volume One left off!  This time, however, they have added a touch more soul and disco into the mix which will give this instalment a more funky feel!

Compiled by David ‘Mr Bongo’ Buttle and Gareth Stephens, plus a few personal favourites from Gary Johnson, Ville Marttila and Graham Luckhurst, this compilation offers an interesting mix off Afrobeat, Bossa Nova, Folk, Funk, Latin, Psychedelia, R&B, Soul and Brazillian Breaks!!

Taken from this forthcoming album comes today’s little Afro-psych gem titled The Time Is Come.  Originally released in 1980 by Nigerian band Effi Duke & The Love Family, this track featured on the band’s acclaimed debut LP, Mr Love.  Effi Duke & The Love Family emerged in the late 70’s when the Nigerian music scene was buzzing with fuzz pedals, wah guitar, lively keyboards and the growing influence of the psychedelic blues of the West.  Their sound was groove-heavy, designed for dancing to and heavily based on funk and afrobeat.   When Effi Duke & The Love Family arrived at Homzy Records with their debut LP, they had no idea that this album would turn out to be one of the more energetic offerings on the influential label, its impressive fusion of funk, jazz, disco and Afrobeat was sensational and otherworldly….and it remains that way even today! Check it out above and listen/pre-order the whole compilation album from here.
