Barbara Lynn wasn’t just an exceptional left-handed blues guitarist, she was also singer who wrote most of her songs and played the lead instrument in all her music.
Being an African-American female artist in the early 60’s was a rarity, but it didn’t take long for Lynn to build a name for herself and soon she was touring with an array of soul musicians such as Gladys Knight, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Dionne Warwick, Jackie Wilson, Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, James Brown, Al Green, Carla Thomas, Marvin Gaye, Ike and Tina Turner, the Temptations, and B.B. King.
Barbara Lynn is best known for her 1962 R&B chart-topping hit, You’ll Lose a Good Thing, but I’m a great fan of Good Woman (will cover that soon) and today’s fantastic Ray Charles 1959 classic, What’d I Say. This live performance took place in 1966 with Lynn playing alongside blues/r&B artist, Clarence Brown and rock’n’roll band, The Beat Boys. It’s just one hell of a performance and I could watch Barbara Lynn on guitar all day!! Check it out above.
