SONG OF THE DAY Ramp – The Old One Two

In 1977 the Cincinnati, Ohio band RAMP ( (an acronym for “Roy Ayers Music Productions”) released their one and only studio album, Come Into Knowledge. Founded in 1976 by Roy Ayres, RAMP consisted of Sharon Matthews and Sibel Thrasher on vocals, Landy Shores on guitar, Nate White on bass, and John Manuel on drums and percussion.  Roy Ayres was never a member of the band, but he did write and produce all of the songs on their single but iconic album.

Last year Ubiquity records reissued two tracks that never made it to this album. These were not new recordings, but vintage RAMP material and both were produced by Roy Ayers post-release of this record.  The Old One Two is a cover of a Roy Ayers track (see his version below), which was written by Ayers, William Allen and Edwin Birdsong and originally released on the Roy Ayers album A Tear To A Smile.  The RAMP version is brighter and punchier and therefore attains a totally different, but equally as cool feel!  The second/flip side track is the boogie tune Paint Me Any Colour, also written and produced by Roy Ayers but never recorded by anyone else.

Sadly, on the 9th April 2020, singer Sibel Thrasher passed away from the Corvid-19 virus and at 68, her untimely death is a tragic loss.  This is another reason why I love today’s song! It’s so bright, vibrant and full of life and is the perfect way to remember this great vocalist! Listen above and grab yourself a copy of both songs from here.
