SONG OF THE DAY Ennio Sangiusto – African Twist

African Twist is one of those songs that will get you up and going…either that or it will drive you mad with its relentless energy. Whichever way you greet it, this will wake you up with a start!!

I came across this today and was rather struck by his wavering vocals, especially the bits near the chorus where he hurls out the drawn-out line, “Africana”.  These heavenly highs are further heightened by ethereal backing vocals, lively surf guitar-chops and punchy organ!

Released as an EP in 1963, African Twist was one of many hits released by Italian singer Ennio Regente, better known as Ennio Sangiusto! Active between 1957 and 1967, he started out as a dancer in his hometown, later turning his natural talents to singing….and the rest as they say…. Listen above.
