SONG OF THE DAY Llans Thelwell & His Celestials – Jive Samba

PrimaryIf you fancy a pick-me-up and something to rattle the mind/body/soul into action, this here Caribbean Jazz beauty may be just what you need?

Originally issued sometime in the early-to-mid 1960’s, the version I am sharing today is a cover of Cannonball Adderley’s famous 1963 Jazz classic, Jive Samba (which I’ve included below). I’m not sure of the exact date that Llans Thelwell & His Celestials released their cover, but it was definitely towards the mid-1960’s…and if you love this and fancy a copy, you may well be wise to invest in the reissue that was put out in 2014 as an original copy is fetching in the realms of £450-500!!

Japan’s Dub Store Records kindly cut this to vinyl for a fraction of the price and had this to say of the record:

This precious record digs deep into Jamaican music to show a unique side of its history. Due to their regular appearances in hotels at Montego Bay, it is reasonable to understand that the band had a range of repertoire other than Ska. The MC’s hype heard right after the riff interprets the excitement of the session and creates a great atmosphere. Matching the original release, backed with a prime Jamaican Soul number by the talented Busty Brown who later recorded with Lee Perry.

This version certainly generates a lot of energy and I love the crazy melodic howls of those horns as they soar to the sky! Llans Thelwell has created his own interpretation of the song, whilst generating the same kind of buzz. Enjoy!
