SONG OF THE DAY Maffio – Tabu

R-13481709-1595959057-8335As far as covers go, this little cosmic swirl of sonic wonder is absolutely spot on!! In fact, if you told me that this was actually performed by an alien band on a planet far far away, I’d quite possibly believe you – such is its authentic otherworldly sound!

Taboo (or sometimes written, Tabu) is a song I am particularly fond of and was originally released in the mid-1930’s by Cuarteto Machin. Written by Margarita Lecuona (with lyrics by Bob Russell), there have been, according to sources, at least 115 renditions over the years – of which some I have covered here, here and here …and each one has its own charm!

So far, today’s version of this classic is by far the most psychedelic of them all (from what I’ve heard) and was recorded and released in 1975 by an artist called Maffio. Retaining the original Latin-feel, today’s cover is experimental and quirky, formed out of electronic roots and fuelled by funky percussion. The artist behind this futuristic treat was named Maffio, but information on this artist is stark to say the least. His version of Taboo was accompanied by the equally cool sounds of Little Boy on the B-side (see below) and was the only 45 this artist put out. Pressed in Guatemala in 1975 and issued on the Polydor label, there is little else I can share about this single – other than its currently fetching in the realms of £215-230 if you were lucky enough to find a copy!! Enjoy
