SONG OF THE DAY James Brute – Ring of Roses

It’s been a long time coming (nearly four years, in fact!) but James Brute is back and makes his return with two hearty offerings that came out for release today!

It was nearly ten years ago on a small stage in Norwich when I first heard the wonders of James Brute. Unaccompanied, it was just him, a guitar and a soul full of angst and honesty that played out that night (as a support act), but it left a lasting impression. All these year later it gives me great pleasure to introduce his new material and its great to know that there is more to come – this time with a sound that is a bit more mellower now?

Today, November 17th, marks the release of two new recordings. Ring of Roses and The Garden are the the first songs to be recorded since 2019, and who better to introduce these tracks but the man himself!? This is what James Brute has to say of the songs:

Written in lockdown, ‘Ring of Roses’ hurtles through a disorientating landscape of shifting time signatures, rumbling piano and psychedelic guitar textures. Its push/pull pulse and swirling sonics wrong-foot, envelop and carry the listener into a thick fog where we listen, lost as the narrator is visited by the spectral apparitions of friends, family, and old lovers via a failing video call. Struggling to find the words to say ‘I miss you, I love you, I’m sorry’ as ‘…goodbyes buffer from their mouths’.

‘The Garden’ (listen below) was inspired by my recent journey into parenthood, haunted by Robert Mitchum’s sinister songs in Night Of The Hunter. Sinuous synth bass meets distant drums, creating the backdrop to a search for missing children. A beautiful and perilous garden plays host to an unseen danger lurking at the edges and in the shadows…”

James Brute writes stirring narratives and I love the way his fevered lyrics are delivered into this world through an ever-changing terrain of dynamic sounds. It was his originality that enticed me in from the start and its this element that keeps me hooked! Great stuff!!

Both of these tracks are out now and if you fancy grabbing yourself a copy, you can find them here.
